Akron, Ohio, Jan. 15, 2025 - Today, Mayor Malik is announcing that the City of Akron will extend hours at Summit Lake Community Center (380 W Crosier St.) from Sunday Jan. 19 through Wed. Jan. 22 from 8:00am to 7:00pm to provide a warming center for residents in need. The warming center has been open a total of 9 days so far this year including today. The Summit Lake Community Center will return to normal hours tomorrow (Thursday), Friday, and Saturday and reopen for extended hours beginning on Sunday. All other City of Akron community centers will be open during their normal business hours.
The city will continue to monitor temperatures and will extend community center hours as necessary. Unless otherwise specified, the center will return to normal business hours starting Thursday, January 23.
The Emergency Overnight Shelter located at 111 East Voris St. will be open tonight. They will then be closed for two days and will reopen beginning on Sat. Jan. 18. They will be open each night from Saturday through Wed. Jan. 22 from 7pm-8am.
The shelter is in need of winter gloves and hand warmers. Any donations are appreciated and can be delivered to the Peter Maurin Center at 1096 S. Main St. Akron, OH on Tuesdays and Fridays between 10am-12:45pm and on Sundays between 11am-1:45pm. You can also sign up to volunteer or donate on the site here.
