Speeding Vehicle Collides with Box Truck, Driver Dies from Injuries

DATE AND TIME OF INCIDENT: 10/16/25 at 3:25 PM
LOCATION OF INCIDENT: Broadway and Oro St., El Cajon, CA
SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:
On Thursday, October 16, 2025, at approximately 3:25 PM, the El Cajon Police Department received reports of a traffic collision near the intersection of Broadway and Oro St. involving a vehicle that struck a box truck. The collision caused the box truck to turn over onto its side, and witnesses reported the involved vehicle was briefly on fire. Officers and paramedics from the Heartland Fire Department responded and found the solo occupant driver of a black BMW trapped inside the driver compartment of the heavily damaged vehicle. First aid was rendered to the driver while Heartland personnel freed him from the vehicle. The driver of the BMW, identified as 19-year-old Jesse Hernandez of El Cajon, was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital with major injuries and later died at the hospital. Two delivery workers inside the box truck suffered only minor injuries.
The intersection remained closed for several hours while officers investigated the cause of the traffic collision. Excessive speed appears to be a factor with witnesses reporting the BMW was possibly involved in a speed contest with a separate vehicle before colliding with the delivery box truck. The investigation is on-going and no arrests have been made.
