(Washington, DC)- Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser, District public safety officials and federal partners provided an overview of preparations and resources for this year's Fourth of July celebrations and America's 250th anniversary events taking place across Washington, DC. With the District expecting to welcome hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors for a series of celebrations-including the Salute to America Celebration and Fireworks, annual parades, World Cup celebrations, Washington Nationals games and more-the Mayor and officials are urging residents and visitors to plan ahead, prepare for several days of extreme heat, utilize public transportation and sign up to receive alerts straight to your phone.
To receive free text messages about this summer's special events, text "DC250" to 888-777. Residents and visitors are also encouraged to sign up for AlertDC at Alert.DC.gov. Both services are free and will provide real-time updates on weather conditions, road closures and more. For information about traffic closures, prohibited items on the National Mall and maps showing recommended locations to view fireworks and flyovers, visit 250.dc.gov.
Officials are also spreading the word that the community should expect frequent flyovers on the Fourth of July. New for 2026, the District created a map to help residents and visitors find locations across the city to enjoy the Fourth of July flyovers and fireworks. The map is available at 250.dc.gov.

Getting Around
Metro
Residents and visitors are strongly encouraged to use public transportation to get around the city during the holiday weekend. Beginning at 5 pm on Saturday, July 4, Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess will be free to ride until the system closes at 2 am. Visit wmata.com for public transportation options into and out of the city, as well as for live updates on train and bus times and any Metro closures.
Road Closures
Extensive street closures and parking restrictions are planned for the Fourth of July celebrations around the National Mall. For a full list of closures and restrictions, view the Metropolitan Police Department's (MPD) traffic advisory.
"Washington, DC is preparing for one of the largest Fourth of July celebrations in our city's history, as well as numerous other events happening this week across the city. The Metropolitan Police Department will be fully activated and working with our partners to ensure every celebration, parade, sporting event and gathering is safe for residents and visitors," said Interim Chief of Police Jeffery W. Carroll. "We encourage everyone to plan ahead, stay aware of their surroundings and report anything suspicious so everyone can enjoy a safe and memorable holiday."
Watercraft Restrictions
The following watercraft restrictions will be in place during the Fourth of July celebrations:
"The District has spent months coordinating with our federal, regional and local partners to ensure residents and visitors can celebrate this Fourth of July safely," said Clint Osborn, DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) Director. "I encourage everyone who lives and works in the District to stay informed this weekend-and year round-by signing up for AlertDC at alert.dc.gov. If you're visiting or want summer event updates, text 'DC250' to 888-777. Both are free and will help you navigate the city safely."
Beat the Heat
High temperatures are expected this week and during the Fourth of July weekend. Temperatures over 95°F can be harmful to those with existing medical conditions and can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Spending long periods of time outside or participating in outdoor physical activity may lead to heat-related illness or injury.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to exercise caution, avoid overheating and check on seniors, vulnerable neighbors, and unsheltered residents. If you are concerned about neighbors experiencing homelessness, or to access free, accessible transportation to a low-barrier shelter or day center, call the Shelter Hotline at (202) 399-7093 or dial 311.

Fireworks Safety Tips
The DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (FEMS) reminds residents:
"July 4th is a time to celebrate, but safety must come first. Fireworks can be unpredictable and dangerous and cause serious injuries and fires in just seconds," said DC Fire and EMS Chief John A. Donnelly Sr. "We encourage residents and visitors to attend professional displays, use legal fireworks responsibly and take simple precautions to protect their families, neighbors and property. We want everyone to safely celebrate and enjoy our nation's 250th birthday."
Cooking Safety Tips
Suspicious Activity Reporting
District agencies are encouraging residents and businesses to remain vigilant for suspicious activity in or around businesses or other venues where people congregate. Suspicious activity may include but is not limited to:
If you observe suspicious activity that presents an immediate threat to life or property, call 911. Otherwise, please report suspicious activity by calling (202) 727-9099, texting 50411, or submitting a suspicious activity report at watch.dc.gov.
Safety Go Teams
The District will implement multi-agency community outreach and engagement efforts on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 with the deployment of Safety Go Teams across the city. These teams serve as a collaborative, non-law enforcement public safety presence, bringing together District agencies and community-based organizations in neighborhoods throughout the city during the holiday weekend. Safety Go Teams will be focused on minimizing the number of reported firework-related incidents, instances of gun violence and criminal activity in hotspot neighborhoods.
"As DC hosts Fourth of July and America 250 celebrations, public safety remains our top priority," said Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Lindsey Appiah. "With enhanced operations and Go Teams deployed throughout the District, we are prepared to support a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend for residents and visitors."
