Transport Infrastructure Ireland Publish Climate Adaptation Implementation Plan for National Roads 2026-2030

Today, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has published its Climate Adaptation Implementation Plan for National Roads 2026-2030, the first plan of its kind for the organisation. TII recognises the growing challenges that Ireland's National Roads network will face in the coming years as severe weather events brought on by climate change become more frequent.

This plan sets out TII's approach to developing a more resilient network, informed by the latest climate projections. It identifies 20 targeted measures that TII will progress over the next five years. This plan sets out the steps TII will take to transition from planning to implementation. All measures are aligned and builds on the objectives outlined in TII's Climate Adaptation Strategy (published in 2022) as well as supporting the actions detailed in the Department of Transport's Transport Sectoral Adaptation Plan (TSAP II), published in 2025.

Overall, the asset value of the National Roads Network is approximately €31 billion euros, it is an investment made by the state to allow people, goods and services to safely traverse the island of Ireland offering a multi-billion euro return on that investment through lives saved and all the economic activity it enables. The "Climate Adaptation Implementation Plan" highlights the importance of investing in the protection of the National Road Network, so that it can function as it was intended, well into the future.

TII looks forward to working collaboratively with stakeholders across the sector as it advances this work to ensure a safe, reliable, and climate resilient National Roads network for Ireland.
