CINCINNATI (October 5, 2026) - The Christ Hospital Health Network was named a Gold Level Center of Excellence in advanced cardiopulmonary life support. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, is a type of life support technology. It does the work of the heart and lungs when those organs are dysfunctional due to advanced heart/lung disease or other illnesses such as trauma. The ECMO machine moves deoxygenated blood out of the body and pumps it through an artificial lung. The artificial lung adds oxygen to the blood, removes carbon dioxide, and then pumps the blood back into the body.

"We are deeply honored and proud to be the recipient of such a prestigious award," said Aarti Narayan, MD, Director of the Farmer Family Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and Director of the ECMO program at The Christ Hospital. "This reflects our commitment to provide the highest quality of care to our patients with life threatening cardiopulmonary failure. The ECMO Center accomplishment shows our focus on quality, patient safety and clinical excellence in advancing health care that we continuously strive to achieve at The Christ Hospital."

ELSO is an international nonprofit consortium of healthcare institutions, researchers, providers, and industry partners. The Excellence in Life Support Award recognizes systems like The Christ Hospital that demonstrates an exceptional commitment to evidence-based processes and quality measures, training staff and continuing education while also achieving patient satisfaction and ongoing clinical care. The ELSO Award of Excellence was established in 2015.
