The launch of The World this fall was the beginning of a new chapter for the International desk. In just a few months, our newsletter for international readers has connected with new audiences around the world, helping them understand the news, and life, everywhere our correspondents go, which is pretty much everywhere.
Some of The World's most engaging features can be traced to Parin Behrooz, who we are excited to announce is joining the desk as an associate editor.
Parin first started working on the desk as an embed earlier this year and showed her adaptability early on, when she jumped into coverage of the Israel-Iran conflict. A native of Tehran, she helped to bring the voices of everyday Iranians into our Live coverage. She also worked with Farnaz Fassihi on a story about the civilian toll of the conflict , and another on airstrikes on Evin prison , which corrected widespread misinformation tied to an A.I.-generated video.
As The World launched, Parin quickly showed her diverse skill set: curating, writing and editing news items; using her New Yorker-honed fact checking and research skills; contributing to the production of reporter videos; and tapping into her impressive network within the Times newsroom to solicit contributions and facilitate collaborations. She is also a force behind one of the most engaging parts of the newsletter: the Where Is This? photo quiz.
Before joining International, Parin spent five years with the Audio team, producing immersive explanatory Reporter Reads that combined narrative editing, field tape and scene-driven structure to feature our journalists. She produced audio segments on Delhi's trash problem , Mexico's cartel scammers and Dominican sound systems .
Parin holds a master's degree from Columbia Journalism School, where she has also taught audio , and a bachelor's in economics and international relations from the University of Rochester. She speaks Farsi and French fluently, and holds a soft spot for off-the-map rap scenes (Memphis, Buffalo, Tehran, Ramallah). So please send her - and The World - your recs.
