Senator Vincent Hughes Announces Over $3M for Philadelphia Community and Education Centers

October 22, 2024Philadelphia, PA - Senator Vincent Hughes announced over $3 million in grants for community and education centers in Philadelphia. The funds were awarded by the PA Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) from the Multipurpose Community Facilities Program.

"These are investments that will empower communities by providing access and support," said Senator Hughes. "Each of these projects will provide better tools and services for community members to learn, grow and take care of their health. When we prioritize access, we provide more opportunities for our neighbors to thrive."

The following projects in the 7th Senatorial District received funding:

  • $1,536,851 to Drexel University for the West Philadelphia Community Center

This project will include the renovation of facilities in the former West Philadelphia Community Center building to facilitate digital learning and other broadband-enabled activities. All activities will be open to the public. This project will enable education, work, and health monitoring and remote access to service and training.

  • $1,000,000 to the Urban League of Philadelphia for the West Philadelphia Community Well-being Center

This project will create a publicly accessible, walk-in model for essential health and social services that support economic empowerment and overall well-being.

  • $500,000 to Lincoln University for Classroom and Technology Upgrades to the School of Adult & Continuing Education

This project will support work, education, and health monitoring in response to ongoing community needs.

In total, $45 million was awarded to community projects across Pennsylvania to construct, acquire, or improve public facilities will directly enable work, education, and health monitoring. More information can be found online.
