Metzgar, Stefano Obtain $2.15 Million in State Funding for Somerset County

January 21, 2026

HARRISBURG - Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-69) and Sen. Pat Stefano (R-32) announced they secured $2.15 million in state funding to assist with six local improvement projects in Somerset County.

Somerset County is receiving $1 million from the Multimodal Transportation Fund (MTF) to repair six pedestrian bridges along six miles of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trail.

The following entities received allocations from the Pennsylvania Small Water and Sewer Program:
Shade-Central City Joint Authority (SCCJA) - $300,000 to increase the capacity in SCCJA's collection and treatment facilities to reduce the possibility of future bypass events into Dark Shade Creek.
Borough of Salisbury - $250,000 for water reservoir site and pump improvements.
Garrett Borough - $200,000 to reduce infiltration and inflow by restoring five sanitary sewer manholes and repairing 1,500 linear feet of sanitary sewer main.
Jennerstown Municipal Water Authority - $200,000 to replace 110 outdated water meters with new ones and relocate them from inside homes to outside meter pits at the property lines.
Confluence Borough Municipal Authority - $200,000 to replace 1,420 linear feet of aging water line along Beggs and Oden streets.

"These investments are commitments to strengthening Somerset County's infrastructure," said Metzgar. "As needs arise, we must be able to act with diligence and urgency to improve quality of life for families and generations now and well into the future. I am proud to see my efforts be successful in getting these deserved funds back into our district."

"Strong infrastructure is essential," said Stefano. "These investments will have a meaningful impact in Somerset County by empowering municipalities to better serve residents, enhance public safety, and support long-term growth for our communities. I'm glad to see these projects put into motion."

The Pennsylvania Small Water and Sewer Program awards grants to municipalities and municipal authorities for water, sewer, storm water and flood control projects with a cost of not less than $30,000 and not more than $500,000. Funds may be used toward construction, improvement, expansion or rehabilitation or repair of a water supply system, sanitary sewer system, storm sewer system or flood control projects.

The MTF provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents of the Commonwealth. Funds may be used for the development, rehabilitation and enhancement of transportation assets to existing communities, streetscape, lighting, sidewalk enhancement, pedestrian safety, connectivity of transportation assets and transit-oriented development.
