Dallas ISD News: Back where they belong: South Oak Cliff’s return to the top

For the fifth consecutive December, SOC returned to AT&T Stadium for the UIL Class 5A Division II State Championship game, but this time, the ending felt different. As the clock expired Saturday afternoon, coaches and players stood frozen in disbelief, tears streaming down their faces as the crowd roared in unison:

"S-O-C! Who they rootin' for?!"

South Oak Cliff was back on top.

After a two-year title drought, the Golden Bears reclaimed the throne, defeating the Dr. Thomas E. Randle High School Lions 35-19 to capture the 2025 UIL Class 5A Division II State Championship and cap another historic season.

The victory marked SOC's fifth straight appearance in a state championship game, placing the Golden Bears among an elite group of just eight programs in Texas high school football history to reach that milestone.

"It was a lot more focus this year playing Randle," said Kyle Ward, defensive coordinator. "When you lose big games in the playoffs that finish your season, it puts things into perspective, and you go back to the drawing board to figure it out."

South Oak Cliff did exactly that.

After falling short the past two seasons, the Golden Bears leaned into discipline and execution, and the result was a complete team effort against a familiar opponent on the sport's biggest stage.

"At the end of the day, it was just playing South Oak Cliff football and handling business," Ward said.

Senior linebacker Jamarion P., a cornerstone of the Golden Bears' defense, said the belief in another championship run truly crystallized during the postseason.

"It really hit when we played Port Neches-Groves that we could go for another state run," he said. "The offense had to get their footing in the first half, and the defense was making a lot of stops to keep us in the game. After that, we knew as a team we had a good chance at making it."

For Jamarion, the moment carried even deeper meaning.

"It means a lot to be a part of this program like SOC," he said. "It's a special blessing that every year I've been in high school I've had the opportunity to be part of a state championship team. We've put in the work to do it, and I have to give our coaches all the credit for putting us in the best position to make history."

Head coach Jason Todd called the championship a meaningful moment in his career, not just because of the trophy but because of what it represents for the South Oak Cliff community.

"I think this is the greatest story because no one ever said this could happen here," Todd said. "And we say you can do it right here in South Oak Cliff, Texas."

As confetti fell and players embraced on the field, the celebration carried a deeper sense of purpose. This season was dedicated to South Oak Cliff High School's beloved registrar, Carla Hill, who passed away just before the Golden Bears began their playoff run.

Hill served the SOC community for more than 20 years, and her impact was felt far beyond the classroom. Her presence was missed throughout the season, but her spirit was with the team every step of the way.

On the game's biggest stage, the Golden Bears delivered a championship worthy of her legacy and added yet another unforgettable chapter to the Golden Bear story.

Dallas ISD will kick off the new year by celebrating the Golden Bears' historic win with a special event on Saturday, Jan. 10, at South Oak Cliff High School.

DALLAS - La rutina continúa para los Golden Bears de South Oak Cliff High School.

Por quinto diciembre consecutivo, SOC volvió al AT&T Stadium para disputarse el Campeonato Estatal de la División II, Clase 5A de la UIL, y en esta ocasión, el final tuvo un aire diferente. A punto de acabarse el tiempo el sábado, los técnicos y jugadores no lo podían creer: sus caras cubiertas de lágrimas y el público aclamándolos con vítores y aplausos y gritando al unísono: ¡S-O-C!, ¿Cuál es tu equipo?

Los Golden Bears se coronaron campeones.

Luego de ser derrotados los últimos dos años, los Golden Bears han alcanzado la victoria al derrotar a los Lions de Dr. Thomas E. Randle High School 35-19 y culminar otra histórica temporada con la victoria de un campeonato.

Este logro marca la quinta participación seguida de SOC en el partido del campeonato estatal, lo que los incorpora en un grupo élite de tan solo ocho programas en la historia de Texas en alcanzar tal hazaña.

"Estuvimos más enfocados este año", dijo el coordinador de defensa Kyle Ward. "Al perder partidos importantes en las eliminatorias que le ponen fin a la temporada, hay que tener una nueva perspectiva, y volver al principio para hacer nuevos planes".

Y es precisamente lo que hizo South Oak Cliff.

Luego de perder las últimas dos temporadas, los Golden Bears explotaron su disciplina y ejecución, y el resultado fue un esfuerzo de equipo contra un oponente familiar en el escenario más grande del fútbol americano de preparatoria.

"A fin de cuentas, era jugar fútbol y hacer lo que uno debe hacer", dijo Ward.

Jamarion P, apoyador y estudiante de 12.º grado, es un pilar de la defensa de su equipo y dijo que su fe en volver al campeonato se materializó durante la postemporada.

"Se volvió real cuando jugamos contra Port Neches-Groves el que podríamos regresar al estatal", dijo. "La ofensiva tuvo que encontrar su ritmo en la primera mitad, y la defensa estaba logrando frenar al otro equipo para mantenernos en el juego. Después de eso, supimos que teníamos buenas posibilidades de llegar".

Para Jamarion, el momento cargaba un significado profundo.

"Significa mucho para mí ser parte de este programa", dijo. "Es una bendición especial que cada año que he estado en preparatoria he tenido la oportunidad de ser parte de un equipo de campeonato estatal. Le hemos dedicado esfuerzo, y tengo que darles el crédito a los profesores por ponernos en la mejor posición para hacer historia".

El técnico principal Jason Todd tildó al campeonato como momento significativo en su carrera, no solo por el trofeo, sino también por lo que representa para la comunidad del sur de Oak Cliff.

"Me parece una gran historia porque nadie pensó que esto podría ocurrir aquí", dijo Todd. "Y nosotros decimos que sí se puede hacer aquí, en South Oak Cliff, Texas".

Mientras volaba el confeti y los jugadores se daban grandes abrazos en el campo, las celebraciones cargaban también un sentido profundo de propósito. Esta temporada fue dedicada a Carla Hill, la muy querida trabajadora de registro de South Oak Cliff, quien falleció justo antes de que los Golden Bears jugarán las eliminatorias.

Hill trabajó en la comunidad por más de 20 años, y su impacto se percibió mucho más allá del salón de clases. Su presencia hizo falta durante la temporada, pero su espíritu estuvo junto al equipo en cada paso del camino.
