On Monday, March 30, 2026, the San Rafael Police Department announced and recognized the retirement of Captain Glenn McElderry after more than three decades of dedicates service to the SRPD and our community
Captain McElderry's career began in San Rafael on March 1, 1993. He had the distinction of serving in the Motor Unit on two separate occasions, being a long-term SWAT team member, a defensive tactics instructor, and a field training officer. After being promoted to Corporal in 2000, he joined the investigations unit as the property crimes detective in 2001. In 2004, he was promoted to Sergeant and, in 2005, returned to the motor unit as the unit supervisor. In 2009, he was promoted to Lieutenant, and in 2012, promoted to Captain.
Beyond the many specialty positions and promotions, Captain McElderry's impact and service reached every corner of the police department and our San Rafael community. He was seen within the department as a teacher, coach, a mentor, and sought the success of those he worked with. The San Rafael community knew Captain McElderry as approachable, professional, and fair. He also listened and found reasons to say "yes," which is not always easily done in a management and leadership role.
Whether within the department or within our community, it was clear Captain McElderry understood the value of building and maintaining friendships and professional working relationships. He is recognized as one of those individuals who made SRPD feel like a family.
"Captain McElderry, your contributions have left an indelible mark on this organization and on the many officers you worked with along the way. On behalf of the entire San Rafael Police Department and the San Rafael community, THANK YOU for your decades of service and commitment. While you will be missed in SRPD's day-to-day, you will not be forgotten. You've had an amazing career and have finally earned a well-deserved retirement. We wish you the best on your new journey and extend our gratitude."
