The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today celebrated National Transit Career Day by hosting a full-day event at Transit Tech High School in Brooklyn. Students were joined by MTA transit professionals from several departments to engage and inspire the next generation of transit professionals, while highlighting the exciting and evolving career opportunities available in public transportation.

"Today's event was a special chance to give New York students a behind-the-scenes look at the transit network that they rely on everyday - and remind them they can shape its future," said NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow. "As someone who's devoted their professional life to the MTA, I know firsthand how rewarding it is to be a part of the system that moves millions and I encourage young people to explore opportunities to build a career at the MTA."

"We're proud to host an engaging and rewarding opportunity to help students learn more about the transit system - one that's an essential part of their daily lives and a defining feature of New York City," said MTA Chief People Officer Mersida Ibric. "We hope the experience sparked their curiosity about the impressive operations that keep the system running and the exciting possibilities for advancements in the years ahead - one they can be a part of."

The event kicked off with opening remarks from Mersida Ibric, MTA Chief People Officer, and was followed by a keynote speech from Bill Amarosa Jr., Executive Vice President of Subways, who shared his personal journey to becoming a leader in public transportation, in addition to discussing technologies that are moving NYC Transit forward, shared examples of new technology that are already being used across the transit system and in general, about an exciting career in transportation. National Transit Career Day is celebrated by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and public transit agencies nationwide.

Throughout the day, students had the chance to meet and interact with MTA professionals from a variety of fields and backgrounds including electrical, power, bus technology, safety systems, construction, operations and planning, project coordination for subways, car equipment, and programming. Agency representatives shared firsthand insights and knowledge about their field - giving students a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn about the different areas in transit and ask questions.
