What Are CSX Investors Betting On

CSX (CSX) stock trades at 26.2 times its adjusted earnings. That multiple prices the railroad's normalized net income over the twelve months ended September 30, 2026, a steep price that follows a 42.6% total return over the past year. That is a lot to pay for one year of a railroad's profit, but the valuation looks different when set against the profit expected over the next two years. So what does the forecast expect CSX to earn, and what price does that put on the stock?

CSX Has To Grow Profit Faster Than Sales

The consensus forecast expects CSX's net income to grow 11.5% in fiscal 2027, compared with 5.7% for revenue. Profit growing about twice as fast as sales means a wider margin, so the forecast puts the fiscal 2027 net margin at 26.1%, up from 24.7% for fiscal 2026. That wider margin is an assumption, not a result, and the forecast remains uncertain: the highest and lowest per-share estimates for fiscal 2027 sit 11.4% apart.

Under the consensus forecast, CSX stock trades at 24.6 times fiscal 2026 earnings, compared with 26.2 times its trailing earnings. Based on the forecast for fiscal 2027, the current share price equals 22.1 times earnings.

Has CSX Been Growing As Fast As The Forecast?

On sales, yes. CSX's revenue rose 5.8% over the twelve months ended September 30, 2026, about the pace the consensus forecast expects for fiscal 2027. The railroad's net margin over those months widened to 24.0% from 20.5% a year earlier, though it still fell short of the forecast's fiscal 2027 margin. The year-earlier figure included a $164 million goodwill impairment taken in the third quarter of 2025. These gains follow a weak year in which revenue fell 3.8% over the twelve months ended September 30, 2025.

The latest quarter went further. During fiscal Q3 2026, CSX's net margin reached 26.2%, about where the consensus forecast puts the margin for fiscal 2027. Management said on the October 21, 2026 call that volume rose 5%, intermodal volume reached an all-time record, and new steel mills on its network are ramping up. Management also raised its 2026 outlook for revenue growth to the high single digits, from mid to high single digits.

Where Could The CSX Forecast Go Wrong?

The sales side of the consensus forecast is most exposed to fuel. Management said fuel contributed about half of CSX's revenue growth in fiscal Q3 2026, as average diesel prices rose nearly 50% from a year earlier. In intermodal, essentially all of the rise in revenue per unit came from fuel surcharges. Lower diesel prices would shrink those surcharges and pull the sales forecast down.

The margin is the other weak spot. Management said on the call that it does not think productivity gains in 2027 will be as big as those in 2026, though it expects them to still be significant, and that CSX is adding train and engine crews to handle the volume it expects. Smaller savings and higher crew costs would make the wider margin in the consensus forecast harder to reach.

If CSX delivers the forecast, the price on fiscal 2027 profit is a fair picture of what you pay. Even though one quarter has already reached it, the forecast could still fall short on the margin if crew and other costs rise faster than the savings. The stock then becomes a riskier bet, priced for profit CSX has not yet earned. CSX's net margin in its fourth-quarter report, expected in January, is the number to watch.

Does This Mean You Should Act On CSX?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
