On March 26, UNESCO participated in the meeting of the National Committee on Hydrology and Meteorology, held at Costa Rica's National Water Directorate of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), with the purpose of presenting a recognition granted by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO PHI-LAC).
This recognition celebrates the long-standing trajectory of Costa Rica's National PHI Committee-currently structured as the National Committee on Hydrology and Meteorology-on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, highlighting its sustained contribution to strengthening water resources management, technical cooperation, and capacity development at both national and regional levels.
Last year, the UNESCO PHI-LAC programme celebrated half a century of existence at the regional level, taking the opportunity to pay tribute to the three longest-standing national committees: Chile, Cuba, and Costa Rica, which since 1975 have been consolidated as references and pillars of water cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The presentation of this recognition reaffirmed the commitment to continue working together, strengthening interinstitutional and regional collaboration to advance toward increasingly integrated, sustainable, and resilient water management.
