WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Ranking Member of the Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) Appropriations Subcommittee, released the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled to expand President Donald Trump's power over independent federal agencies:
"Today's decisions, taken together, reveal a Supreme Court captured by the twisted ideology of unitary executive power. We are about to celebrate 250 years of an America whose Founders were more concerned about the tyrannical over-concentration of power in the hands of one leader than anything else. This Court's decision in Trump v. Slaughter rejects stare decisis and takes us back to a spoils system.
"Congress intentionally set up independent agencies, boards, and commissions to reflect both majority and minority views. While Minority members' views may be at odds with an administration, the Congress clearly intended for that to be the case. Indeed, without multiple perspectives, the regulatory agencies will not be what they were designed to be.
"The Court is establishing a view that it is the President's policies, not the judgement of an independent commission, that matter - a continuation of the Administration's objective of "Trump adherence" as the litmus test for service. The court should at its earliest opportunity rectify this judgement and reinstate the critical independence of these agencies."
