The Yuma City Council, alongside City leadership, recently convened for its annual Strategic Planning Retreat to review progress, discuss key issues, and align on priorities for the year ahead.
Held over two days, the retreat provided an opportunity for Council and staff to step back from day-to-day operations and focus on long-term planning, strategic initiatives, and the future direction of the community.
"The retreat is an important time for our City Council to come together to analyze our efficiencies and strategic decisions for the future of Yuma," said Mayor Douglas Nicholls. "At the annual retreat, we can use our role as public servants to ensure the strategic plan has the public's best interest in mind, that its execution is delivering results, and that the entire community is represented."
Building on Progress
Council began the retreat by reflecting on accomplishments from the past year. Highlights included continued investment in parks and infrastructure, progress in public safety planning and staffing, advancements in economic development initiatives, and improvements in technology, asset management, and organizational effectiveness.
Additional progress was noted in areas such as downtown revitalization, housing and growth management, employee development, and community engagement efforts-including the Youth Government Program and planning for Yuma's America 250 celebration.
Refining the Strategic Plan
As part of the retreat, Council reviewed the City's Strategic Plan and made updates to better reflect current priorities and ongoing work. Several initiatives were transitioned from "new" to ongoing efforts, reflecting a shift from planning to implementation and execution.
Council also identified emerging priorities, including continued development of the Innovation District, enhanced communication and community engagement strategies, and further alignment of public safety and infrastructure planning.
Key Topics and Direction
During the retreat, Council provided direction on several priority topics:
Looking Ahead
The retreat reinforced a shared commitment between Council and staff to focus on implementation and delivering results, maintain strong core services, and continue investing in projects and programs that support Yuma's growth and quality of life.
