Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Celebrate and Educate During “See Tracks? Think Train” Week

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad in partnership with the MTA Police will kick off "See Tracks? Think Train" Week on Monday, Sept. 23.

"See Tracks? Think Train" Week is a concentrated week of rail safety education focusing attention on the importance of making safe choices when driving or walking near railroad tracks and trains.

"Safety is a core value at the Long Island Rail Road," said LIRR President Rob Free. "The LIRR participates in events like these with MTAPD to reinforce our commitment to keeping our customers, our employees and the communities we serve safe."

"There is no higher priority on Metro-North Railroad than the safety of our employees, our customers and the communities that we serve," said Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi. "Being part of these events further demonstrates the commitment of our staff and our colleagues at MTAPD to educate riders and the public about safe practices on or near the railroad."

LIRR Corporate Safety along with MTA PD will have people at 5 different stations throughout the week.

They will be joined by the DOT, FRA and Response Crisis Center.

  • Bethpage on Monday, Sept. 23, from 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
  • Deer Park on Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
  • Hewlett on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
  • Syosset on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
  • Stony Brook on Friday, Sept. 27, from 12:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Metro-North Railroad Corporate Safety along with MTA PD is hosting informational sessions about suicide prevention on Monday, Sept. 23.

Safety staff will be at the following stations during the week as well:

  • Spring Valley, Main Street, Roaring Brook Road, Hudson Ave. and Glover Street in Norwalk, CT on Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 6:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.
  • Grand Central Terminal, New Rochelle, Croton-Harmon, White Plains, Riverdale, Bronxville, Poughkeepsie, Harlem-125th Street, Wilton, Greenwich, Bridgeport, New Haven on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
  • Customer Safety Day table at Grand Central Terminal from 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Stamford from 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26.

First held in the U.S. in 2017 and called "Rail Safety Week", this collaborative effort among Operation Lifesaver Inc., State Operation Lifesaver Programs and rail safety partners across the U.S., Canada and Mexico is now called "See Tracks? Think Train" Week (ST3Week for short) throughout the U.S. to better represent what the week-long observance is all about:

- Preventing railroad crossing and trespass incidents across North America.

- Concentrating public attention on the need for rail safety education.
