As we celebrate and leverage nearly a century of Arctic research expertise, capacity, capabilities and infrastructure, UAF continues to advance critical basic and applied Arctic research for our state, nation and the world. And as we work toward our goal of joining other elite research universities by attaining Carnegie Research 1 status, our Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks must reflect the scale, scope and magnitude of our work and ambitions. Therefore, I am pleased to have recently designated a signature portion of the West Ridge as the UAF Arctic Research Park.
This designation received unanimous endorsement from the Master Planning Committee on Feb. 9, and it enjoys widespread support throughout our research community. Arctic Research Park is a more accurate description of the critical work taking place there.
However, while most of our Arctic research takes place in this location, essential research also occurs elsewhere on the Troth Yeddha' campus. Important research is conducted in our colleges, schools, academic units, institutes and centers, and this designation does not diminish the research performed elsewhere on campus.
What this means for our campus
The designation of the UAF Arctic Research Park is more than a branding exercise; it is a declaration of UAF's expertise and a place to attract partners from industry, state agencies, the federal government and a myriad of organizations and entities with an interest in Alaska and the broader Arctic.
By establishing the park, we are:
Vision for the future: A framework for growth
The establishment of the UAF Arctic Research Park serves as the foundation for several long-term strategic goals.
Moving forward
The physical boundaries of the park (as detailed in the master map) include the primary research corridor of the West Ridge. In the coming weeks, you will see this designation integrated into our institutional communications, partner outreach materials and campus wayfinding.
This is a milestone for our community. The UAF Arctic Research Park is not just a destination for today's scientists; it is the framework upon which the next generation of Arctic discovery will be built and where university-industry partnerships will flourish.
Thank you for your continued dedication to making UAF a global leader in Arctic research.
