University of Tartu researcher Triin Laisk shortlisted for prestigious science award 22.09.2025

Triin Laisk, Associate Professor of Genomics and Reproductive Genetics at the University of Tartu, has become the first person from the Baltics to be selected as one of eight finalists in the Scientific Achievement category of the Inspiring Women in Science competition organised by the journal Nature .

Triin Laisk's research aims to understand the genetic and biological processes that shape women's health and to develop evidence-based solutions for the prevention and treatment of gynaecological diseases and other issues. The research group led by Triin has developed models to assess the genetic risk for both cervical cancer and pelvic organ prolapse, and has investigated why the side effects of hormonal contraceptives vary between individuals.

"It is a great honour that our work has been recognised internationally. I am also pleased that both women in science and research into women's health are increasingly acknowledged," said Laisk.

Inspiring women in science

The leading scientific journal Nature and The Estée Lauder Companies launched this research award in 2018. The competition aims to support and recognise women scientists worldwide and to promote equal opportunities in science.

This is one of the most internationally prestigious awards for women scientists, with candidates nominated from all over the world. For example, 210 scientists from 65 countries participated in last year's competition. Previous winners include US immunologist and mRNA vaccine developer Kizzmekia Corbett, Thai genomicist and creator of DNA-based diagnostics for melioidosis Claire Chewapreecha, and US bioengineer Kiana Aran, who developed a CRISPR-based rapid diagnostic tool for detecting gene mutations.

Two award categories

In the Scientific Achievement category, scientists whose work has led to significant scientific breakthroughs are recognised. The Science Outreach category highlights projects and initiatives that inspire girls and women to engage with science.

The winner in each category will receive a prize of 50,000 US dollars to expand their scientific activities. The winners will be announced at the end of October.
