Seawolves drop hammer on 'Jacks, 81-48

Rocklin, Calif. (Nov. 9) - Freshman forward Ashlyn Rean collected 16 points, six assists and five rebounds Saturday, helping the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a dominating 81-48 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt in the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic at Warrior Arena.

The Seawolves (4-0) also got 16 points and six rebounds from junior guard Elaina Mack as they shot 51 percent from the field, forced 27 turnovers and won 38-24 on the boards.

The Lumberjacks (0-2) were led by 10 points from guard Riley Sanz, but the California Collegiate Athletic Association club was outscored 35-6 in points off turnovers and 48-18 in the paint.

"That was much more of a complete team effort," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, who moved within one win of 300 for his career. "They had trouble with our pressure and our size down low, and we made them pay for their mistakes. We showed today that we can be a very dangerous team when we get contributions up and down the lineup."

UAA's full-court press continued to pay dividends the second half, holding the Lumberjacks to two points in the first six minutes, and stretching the lead to 60-36 after three quarters.

Senior center Tori Hollingshead just missed her second double-double with 11 points (3-4 FG, 5-6 FT) and nine rebounds, while senior forward Jaisa Gamble contributed 11 points (5-7 FG, 1-1 FT), five rebounds, two assists, no turnovers and a career-high five steals.

Senior transfer Emilia Long finished with nine points and four steals against her former team, and junior forward Hedda Koehne had eight points and two blocks.

A redshirt from Rangiora, New Zealand, Rean shot 7 of 12 from the floor and 2 of 2 at the stripe, along with three steals on the defensive end.

Mack shot 4 of 11 from three-point range as the King Cove native became the 18th player in program history to surpass 100 career treys.

UAA returns to California for three more non-conference games next week, starting with a Friday (12:30 p.m. AST) contest against Point Loma in San Diego. Find links to live video and stats at GoSeawolves.com.
