The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) and Volaris Airlines today celebrated the start of nonstop service for the ultra-low-cost carrier between Midway International Airport and the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi, located in the nation's center.

Mexico City-based Volaris - which is the largest foreign-flag carrier by flights at Chicago's airports - will operate the route on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, using an Airbus A32neo aircraft with 186 coach seats. The service will be Volaris' seventh nonstop destination operating at Midway, with five nonstop destinations currently operating at O'Hare International Airport.

"It is critical that Chicago's airports provide a seamless and steady volume of service between here and Mexico for residents visiting loved ones, and travelers exploring the amazing attractions and cultural heritage of both our city and San Luis Potosi," said CDA Commissioner Michael McMurray. "On behalf of Mayor Brandon Johnson and the people of Chicago, the CDA is honored to deepen our ties to Mexico with Volaris' new nonstop service between Midway and San Luis Potosi."

"The United States is a key market for Volaris, and this expansion reflects our long-term commitment to connecting more communities on both sides of the border," said Volaris Executive Vice President Holger Blankenstein. "By adding 11 new nonstop routes, we are providing travelers in the U.S. with more affordable options to reach Mexico's most dynamic cities, while continuing to strengthen our presence in key markets such as California, Texas and the Midwest."

More than one-fifth of Chicago's population are of Mexican descent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Chicago's metropolitan area is second to Los Angeles for the largest Mexican population in the U.S., and the Southwest Side communities surrounding Midway are home to many of the city's Mexican residents.

Flights from Midway to San Luis Potosi International Airport will depart at 7:30 p.m., landing after 10:30 p.m. CST. Flights from San Luis Potosi will depart around 1:30 p.m. CST, arriving at Midway around 6:05 p.m. The new route is Chicago's first nonstop flight service to San Luis Potosi since 2008.
