International IDEA ready to support NATO Allies commitment to democratic security

International IDEA welcomes today's recognition by NATO Allies that collective defence must include protecting critical infrastructure and enhancing the resilience of the systems that underpin free democratic countries. This should include initiatives to prevent and counter foreign information manipulation and interference, protect electoral and constitutional processes, and strengthen the resilience of democratic institutions.

Strong democracies are part of a strong defence. Just as the Cold War was won through military strength and political influence, winning a peaceful future today also requires sustained support to democracy at home and in the world. As democracy is backsliding or under attack in many parts of the world, challenged by growing authoritarianism, today's commitment by NATO Allies is an affirmation that strengthening militaries must go hand in hand with strengthening the democratic societies they protect.

International IDEA stands ready to support the 12 NATO Allies in our membership in implementing their commitment to democratic security.
