New sign marks milestone for Golisano Children's Hospital of Buffalo

Golisano Children's Hospital of Buffalo marked an important milestone Wednesday, Oct. 7, when its new exterior sign was illuminated for the first time. The sign marks a significant step in the hospital's transition to its new name following philanthropist B. Thomas Golisano's historic $50 million gift in August 2025.

Hospital President Stephen Turkovich, MD, was joined by Annie Murphy, coordinator of the Golisano Children's Alliance, representatives from the Golisano Foundation and two young patients for the celebration. Bella, 11, a Golisano Children's Hospital Champion Kid, and D'aere, 6, a former patient who participates in the Stone's Buddies program, helped Dr. Turkovich light the sign, illuminating the hospital's name atop the 12-story building for the first time.

The event marked a visible milestone in the hospital's transition while recognizing the people and partnerships helping shape its future. With the support of Mr. Golisano, Golisano Children's Hospital of Buffalo is working to expand specialized services, advance pediatric medicine and help more children receive the care they need close to home.

"Mr. Golisano's transformational gift is more than just dollars. It is a gift of hope, healing and a brighter future for the children of Buffalo and the children of every community with a Golisano Children's Hospital," said Dr. Turkovich during the celebration. "This gift has lit the flame that will brighten our next chapter of innovation and holistic healing. Mr. Golisano has sparked our dreams and now we can dream big, and ask why not us?"

Since the gift was announced, the hospital has begun advancing new programs, treatments and technologies to strengthen pediatric care close to home.

One of the first major initiatives is a planned $10 million comprehensive outpatient mental and behavioral health center on the sixth floor of the adjacent Conventus Building. The new center will double outpatient capacity and introduce the region's first pediatric partial hospitalization program, providing more intensive treatment and support for children who need it. The project is underway, with the center expected to open in 2027.

The hospital is also developing a five-year pediatric surgical strategic plan that includes a new fetal surgery program, bringing advanced treatment options to Buffalo and helping families access specialized care closer to home. The gift will also support the expansion of the Roswell Park Golisano Children's Buffalo Cancer and Blood Disorders Program, strengthening its multidisciplinary team and the care available to children facing a cancer diagnosis.

As a member of the Golisano Children's Alliance, the hospital will have additional opportunities to collaborate with children's hospitals across the country, share expertise and advance pediatric care through clinical innovation, research, education, workforce development and advocacy.

The illuminated sign serves as a reminder of the hospital's longstanding legacy and its continued commitment to advancing pediatric medicine, expanding access to specialized services and ensuring children and families can receive the care they need close to home.
