August 4 - DOJ Lawsuit Seeking Sensitive Colorado Voter Information Dismissed; Statement from Secretary of State Jena Griswold

Denver, August 4, 2026 - Today, the U.S. Department of Justice lost its case against Secretary Griswold seeking unredacted sensitive voter rolls from Colorado.

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold has issued the following statement:

"Trump and his DOJ are attacking elections and democracy. We will not let them win. Today's victory affirms that Trump's DOJ has no right to Coloradans' sensitive voter information," said Secretary of State Jena Griswold. "I will always defend our elections from unlawful federal interference."

Colorado is one of at least 30 states sued for their refusal to produce unredacted, sensitive statewide voter registration information. To date, the Department of Justice has lost 20 of those cases, including in Colorado, and one appeal.

The DOJ lawsuit followed the December 1, 2025 outreach from the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. DOJ to the Colorado Secretary of State's Office to ask the Office to enter into an agreement to share unredacted voter data, including a voter's full name, date of birth, residential address, and complete state driver's license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number. On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Secretary Griswold declined that request.

It also followed the November 18, 2025 letter that Secretary Griswold led to the DOJ and U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The letter was signed by 10 Secretaries of State seeking information on DOJ and DHS's collection and use of state voter roll data and whether the DOJ and DHS misled state officials. Neither the DOJ nor DHS replied to the questions in that letter.

Because the case was dismissed with prejudice, the Department of Justice may not refile these claims against the Secretary.
