2026 DLA Hall of Fame inductee: Lee Oppenheim

Editor's Note: This is one of five stories featuring 2026 Defense Logistics Agency Hall of Fame inductees. An induction ceremony will be held 1 p.m. May 7 at the McNamara Headquarters Complex auditorium on Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The ceremony is open to all DLA employees; invitations are not needed.

A technical expert recognized for his expertise in fuel quality assurance and resolving complex supply chain challenges is a 2026 DLA Hall of Fame inductee.

Lee Oppenheim's federal government career began in 1976 as a chemist. He became a quality assurance representative stationed overseas to gain experience in the field before returning to the DLA Energy Quality Directorate on Fort Belvoir.

Oppenheim worked on the transition from Jet Propellant 8 to commercial jet fuel and led the effort to solve the "apple jelly" phenomenon, a fuel additive issue that affected jet fuel availability. He represented the agency in external organizations, including the American Society of Testing and Materials International and the American Petroleum Institute.

To build the next generation of quality assurance professionals, Oppenheim established a Quality Intern Program and served as an instructor for DLA Energy courses.

His nominator, Air Force Col. Jennifer Neris, director of DLA Energy's Commander's Action Group, said Oppenheim had an unmatched ability to address any subject matter regarding fuel quality assurance. She noted that Oppenheim's time in the field gave him a perspective he leveraged to bridge the gap between headquarters management and field operations, ensuring DLA's fuel quality standards were met without compromising operational readiness.

According to the nomination packet, his expertise was sought not only within DLA but also by industry partners, making him a respected voice across the fuel community. Neris stated his legacy is found not only in the policies he shaped but also in the countless individuals he mentored throughout his four decades of service.
