Icy road conditions likely across east-central Georgia

Augusta, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Transportation is continuing to monitor and treat routes in east-central Georgia. As of 7 p.m. Saturday, most state routes in east-central Georgia are passable, however, icy conditions are developing in multiple locations.

Black ice is likely to form across Georgia DOT's east-central district overnight. Road temperatures have remained above freezing across most of the district on Saturday. However, current weather forecasts indicate air temperatures will fall below 20 degrees across most of the district overnight, increasing the chances of road temperatures dropping low enough for water currently on the roadway to freeze.

Georgia DOT crews will work throughout the night to treat routes. Crews will continue plowing and salting interstates and high-priority state routes. Our goal is to keep the outside, right-hand lane passable on routes with two lanes in each direction. On routes with three or more lanes in each direction, we are working to keep two outside lanes passable in each direction.

Drivers are advised to avoid non-essential travel overnight into Sunday morning. Icy road conditions are likely in several locations across the district. Road closures are possible.

Crews continue to be staffed around the clock. All district maintenance personnel are working 12-hour shifts until the threat is over.
