The City of Salinas has released its Rental Registration and Rent Stabilization Quarterly Update. The update outlines the city's progress in tracking local housing data, enforcing rental regulations, and expanding community outreach.
From January 1 through March 31, thousands of local rental units successfully registered under the program, generating $754,568 to fund ongoing program operations. These registration fees are broken down into two types:
Rental Registry Ordinance (RRO): 2,211 units signed up at $29 per unit.
Rental Stabilization Ordinance (RSO): 6,165 units signed up at $112 per unit.
The quarterly data highlights how local residents and property owners are utilizing the city's new legal dispute processes. Early this year:
Tenants filed 7 requests to lower their rent.
Landlords filed 1 request to increase rent.
Moving forward, city staff will focus on continuous compliance monitoring, fixing software system glitches with their vendor, and expanding multilingual outreach into Spanish and indigenous languages. They will also continually evaluate the program to quickly update notices and instructions based on direct feedback. This ensures all housing materials remain equitable, legally transparent, and fully accessible to all Salinas residents.
