Upcoming Changes to Death Benefits

October 7, 2026

Governor JB Pritzker recently signed legislation to increase the lump sum death benefit that an IMRF member's beneficiary receives after their passing.

The lump sum death benefit will increase from $3,000 to $8,000 beginning January 1, 2027. This means that if you first retire on or after January 1, 2027, your beneficiaries will receive an $8,000 lump sum death benefit along with the other death benefits they may be entitled to receive.

This death benefit increase also applies to certain vested members currently working for an IMRF employer and certain vested IMRF members who are not currently working for an IMRF employer in event of their death.

If you first retire before or on December 31, 2026, your beneficiaries will receive a $3,000 lump sum death benefit and any other benefits they may be entitled to receive.

Below are some frequently asked questions about the change in benefits.

Who does this benefits increase apply to?

It applies to current, vested IMRF members and inactive members who are fully vested in IMRF who are eligible for the burial benefit, and individuals who first retire on or after January 1, 2027.

Will my spouse still receive a surviving spouse pension?

Yes, if you are vested in IMRF and have a qualified spouse, they will still receive a surviving spouse pension and the lump sum death benefit.

Will beneficiaries automatically receive this money?

Beneficiaries will receive this benefit after they report the IMRF member's death and submit the required forms.

What are the exact death benefits my beneficiaries will receive?

If you are an active IMRF member, your Member Statement will show the amount your beneficiaries will receive.

If you are retired, you can see this information on your Annuitant Statement. You can find a copy in your Member Access account.

How do I update my beneficiaries?

Making sure your beneficiaries are up to date is something that can help make processing your death benefits easier for your loved ones. This includes their full legal name, phone number, email address, and, if possible, their Social Security number.
