LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) team members and executives witnessed the "topping out" of the Terminal 4 Modernization Program at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This week, crews lifted and placed the final steel beam upon the terminal's new frame, reflecting the completion of substantial structural construction of the modernized facility.
"This is another important step in LAX's multi-billion-dollar capital improvement program which is creating a better travel experience for Angelenos and visitors alike," said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. "I want to recognize the leadership of CEO John Ackerman and the Board of Airport Commissioners for making these critical investments to develop the world-class airport that Los Angeles deserves, especially as we prepare to welcome the world with the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games."
The topping out of Terminal 4 occurred when construction crews lifted the final steel beam to place atop the frame of the terminal's main concourse, which connects with gates already completed at its southern concourse. Following the topping out, the structure is now considered ready for crews to install interior finishes, such as walls and windows, as well as mechanical equipment like heat and air conditioning.
"The topping out of Terminal 4 marks an important milestone, putting us closer to what will be an enhanced airport experience for guests at LAX flying with American Airlines," said John Ackerman, Chief Executive Officer, LAWA. "We look forward to welcoming guests to this transformed facility, as Los Angeles prepares to take the global spotlight in the years ahead."

The Terminal 4 Modernization Program began with enabling works in 2018 and includes two major projects. The first is the Terminal 4.5 Vertical Core, which integrates the entrance of the terminal with a direct connection between Terminals 4 and 5 and SkyLink. This project was completed in 2022. The second is the modernization of Terminal 4 itself, which includes a new terminal entrance, a new south concourse, and a refurbishment of the corridor connecting these facilities.
The project employs more than 6,200 workers, including 11 graduates from the HireLAX Apprenticeship Readiness Program. Workers on the project earn an average hourly wage of more than $75, with more than 2.8 million hours worked through March 2026.
The Terminal 4 Modernization Program is part of LAWA's overall mission to create a more seamless and memorable experience for every guest to enjoy - from out-of-town and first-time visitors to lifelong Angelenos. For more information, please visit https://www.lawa.org/transformingLAX.
This milestone follows LAWA's recently unveiled new identity and narrative at LAX infusing all elements of the airport with the spirit of Los Angeles. The initiative aims to better reflect the region's culture, neighborhoods and creative energy into the employee and passenger experience.
