I would like to remind you ahead of exam season of your rights and responsibilities regarding proctoring assignments. This year, Regents exams will take place from Tuesday, June 9, to Friday, June 26. School administrators have been distributing assignments to staff for exam days.
The DOE issued the following guidance in the Jan. 6 edition of Principal's Digest:
School counselors should not be placed on the schedule as test room proctors or hall monitors unless in an emergency (e.g., other staff are unavailable).
This applies not only to Regents exams, but to any schoolwide exams, including but not limited to midterm walk-ins, PSATs/SATs for high school students and English language arts and math exams for elementary and middle school students.
I also encourage you to familiarize yourself with Article 7B of the DOE-UFT contract, which governs our rights when asked to perform assignments outside of our normal roles. Please review this important part of our collective bargaining agreement. Please note: You must be logged in to the UFT website to read the contract.
If you are assigned as a proctor or hall monitor, please contact me using your personal, non-DOE email address. Please also inform your school's UFT chapter leader and mention these guidelines from Principal's Digest.
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to email me at mailtorthompson [at] uft [dot] org (rthompson[at]uft[dot]org).
