Get growing! Beginner-friendly gardening tips

Spring is here, and that means gardening time! Get everyone digging in the dirt with these beginner-friendly gardening tips.

Decide on the type of garden.

Come springtime, the garden stores and nurseries are overflowing with packets of seed and new seedlings just looking for a garden home. Before you fill your shopping cart, decide what type of garden you want for your Atwell home.

Do you dream of healthy summer meals with fresh veggies straight from the garden? Do you want to enjoy the aromas and flavors from a backyard herb garden? Or maybe you want to start a flower garden to attract butterflies or birds. Because the type of garden dictates the sunshine, soil and water needs, start there.

Choose the location.

Consider several factors when deciding where to plant your new Atwell garden. First is sunshine. Most vegetables and many flowers thrive in full sun, at least six to eight hours a day. Others do best with only morning sun, and some prefer a cool shady spot. Spend some time observing the amount of sunshine hitting different parts of your yard. Look at nursery plant tags or ask your local nursery experts for sunlight recommendations.

Water is another factor to consider. Sure, some plants are thirstier than others, but they all need some water. Make sure your garden is accessible to a water hose or sprinklers. And lastly, locate your garden where you can easily access it since planting the garden is just the start. A garden that is visible and accessible is more likely to get the regular love it requires.

Prepare and plant.

Nutrient-rich, well-drained soil is critical for healthy plant growth. Remove any weeds in the existing soil. Use a spade or tiller to loosen the soil, adding garden soil and organic matter to create at least six to eight inches of loose topsoil. Starter plants in small pots are an easy way for first-time gardeners to begin. Follow the label's instructions for planting depth and distance between plants. Once they are firmly in the ground, water well. Check the moisture about three inches below the surface every couple of days to know when it's time to water again. Adding a layer of mulch helps retain moisture and keep out weeds, too. Then start enjoying the fruits of your labor!
