The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing the replacement of the retaining wall adjacent to Cargill Falls Mill below Route 44 in Putnam. This project commenced on Monday, June 22, 2026 and consists of the full replacement of the retaining wall adjacent to Cargill Falls Mill, full reconstruction of Route 44 above the retaining wall, and the removal of the flashing beacon at the intersection of Route 44 and Church Street.
CTDOT Project No. 0115-0122 was awarded to Richards Corporation at a cost of $6,742,733.00 on March 18, 2026, and is scheduled to be completed July 20, 2027. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 2 in Norwich.
LANE CLOSURE/DETOUR INFO
A section of Route 44 from High Street to Church Street will be closed to all traffic starting Monday, July 27, 2026, and remained closed until Monday, May 17, 2027.
All detour routes will have proper signage to direct traffic. Pedestrians will have walkway access through the work zone during off-work hours. Shuttle services will be provided to pedestrians during work hours.
Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this area.
