UTMB Health adds prescription kiosks to urgent care

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) has launched prescription dispensing kiosks at select urgent care clinics, giving patients faster access to prescribed medications before they leave the clinic. UTMB Health is the first hospital system in the Houston area to offer this amenity.

The kiosks are available at select UTMB Health urgent care clinics in League City, Galveston, Webster, Angleton, and Texas City.

How the prescription dispensing kiosk works

"The urgent care clinician sends the prescription to the UTMB Health pharmacy, where a pharmacist reviews it for safety and regulatory compliance," said Akeem Bale, PharmD, vice president of pharmacy services at UTMB. "Instead of picking it up at a pharmacy counter, the patient receives it through the kiosk in the urgent care clinic."

Patients enter their name and date of birth, review instructions, and pay their copay before receiving their medication from the kiosk.

Each kiosk stocks antibiotics, inhalers, and other medications commonly prescribed in urgent care settings.

The goal is to help patients leave urgent care with the medications they need without an additional trip to the pharmacy.
