Situation in Madagascar (15 October 2025)

France is following the current situation in Madagascar with the utmost attention.

The deep aspirations of the Malagasy people - especially their young people - for a better, fairer and more dignified life must be fully listened to and taken into account. Their voices carry the hope of a future based on justice, equality of opportunity and respect for basic rights.

France expresses its sympathy for the victims, those injured and all those affected by recent developments. One seriously injured female demonstrator is being medically evacuated to Réunion.

It is essential today for democracy, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law to be scrupulously protected.

These principles cannot be compromised. They form the bedrock on which any fair, peaceful society is built.

France is ready, alongside the regional players, especially our regional partners of the African Union (AU), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) - which should be at the forefront since this is an African situation - and with the international community, to support the search for such a solution.

France therefore calls on all those concerned - institutional, political and social actors - to show responsibility, restraint and [a willingness for] dialogue. They are duty-bound to guarantee a calm, respectful climate in which everyone can freely express themselves without fear, pressure or foreign interference.

Our compatriots' safety is at the heart of our concerns. The French Embassy and Consulate in Antananarivo remain fully mobilized to guarantee the safety of our fellow citizens in Madagascar.
