New playground opens as Lakewood continues park upgrades

Families gathered at Bloomfield Park on Saturday, May 9 to celebrate the grand opening of a new playground for school-age children.

The colorful new play area features towers, ramps, slides and chutes designed to give kids more ways to climb, explore and play. Lakewood City Council members joined local families for the ribbon cutting. Everyone enjoyed the light refreshments and free souvenirs to mark the completion of the city's latest playground project.

Measure L and Los Angeles County Measure A funds made the new playground possible. It's one example of how Measure L and other grant funds are helping Lakewood invest in parks and public spaces throughout the city.

Nearby Palms Park in eastern Lakewood will benefit when work is completed on upgrades to the park's community center. While a lot of the work is behind-the-scenes (like updating 50-year-old mechanical systems), more obvious improvements are on the way, too: construction of a new teen activity room, new exterior and interior finishes and accessible restroom improvements.

Funding for the approximately $8 million project is pooled from a variety of sources: the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), additional federal funds secured through Congressman Robert Garcia, state funds and the city's own voter-approved Measure L.

Together, the projects reflect the city's continued investment in safe, welcoming public spaces where Lakewood residents of all ages can play, gather and connect.
