Montana State to host campus thrift sale May 9 and 10

Sale items will include clothes, small appliances, electronic chargers and other items donated by students moving out of campus residence halls. Shoppers who purchase a tote bag for five dollars can fill it with as many small items and soft goods as will fit inside, and larger items will be priced individually.

The event is designed to keep unwanted items out of the landfill, according to Garrett Wright, MSU's Zero Waste coordinator, who said 460,000 pounds of non-diverted trash were generated across campus last May.

"The goals of this project are to reduce that overall number, as well as increase availability of items to purchase for students moving off campus or for other community members at a bargain rate," Wright said.

Items will be collected from residence halls in the week leading up to the sale, and community members can drop off items between 2 and 5 p.m. on Friday, May 8, at Stadium Gate 8, which is also the entrance to the sale. Gate 8 can be accessed via South Seventh Avenue.

Unsold items will be donated to Habitat for Humanity and HRDC. Sale proceeds will be used to support the thrift sale in 2027.

The event is sponsored by the MSU Office of Sustainability, Residence Hall Association, Off-Campus Student Life and ASMSU.
