MNB commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács with a collector coin

Budapest, 28 August 2026 - The Magyar Nemzeti Bank is paying tribute to the heroes of the Battle of Mohács by issuing a collector coin on the 500th anniversary of this historic event, announced MNB Deputy Governor Levente Sipos-Tompa, who is responsible for the supervision of financial institutions and consumer protection, at an event organised by the Mohács City Municipality. The Deputy Governor added that the collector coins with a face value of thirty thousand forints in silver and a face value of six thousand forints in non-precious metal will be issued twice in five thousand copies.

Sipos-Tompa emphasised that by issuing the coin, the MNB is honouring the heroes and victims of the Battle of Mohács, as well as the courage of the Hungarian soldiers who selflessly defended their country to the end. The Deputy Governor noted that the primary role of collector coins is to convey value and raise awareness, and that their use in everyday payments is to be avoided, as they represent a unique value due to the limited number of copies and sophisticated artistic execution. The denomination is intended to preserve the value the coin holds as a collector's item. Introducing the coin, he explained that the obverse features a composition reminiscent of the split gate of the Mohács National Memorial and a stylised depiction of a grave decorated with cross-shaped motifs, split in two by a sword, with an inscription quoting the final sentences of Károly Kisfaludy's poem 'Mohács', written in 1821. The reverse shows horsemen charging into battle, with a row of spears symbolising the Turkish army in front of them.
