On Feb. 28, 2026, KENS 5 interviewed David Lesch, Ph.D. , Trinity University's Ewing Halsell Distinguished Professor of History and expert on the Middle East, who discussed the rising tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran just hours before reported military strikes. Lesch explained that growing fears about Iran's nuclear capabilities, missile programs, and regional influence had increased pressure on the U.S. and Israel to act. He noted that leaders in both countries view preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons as a critical security priority.
Lesch also warned that a strike on Iran carries significant risks of escalation. Iran has a wide network of regional allies and military capabilities that could retaliate against U.S. forces or Israeli targets, potentially drawing other countries into a broader Middle East conflict. While military action might temporarily weaken Iran's capabilities, Lesch emphasized that the long-term consequences could destabilize the region and trigger a much wider war.
