Trump’s Transportation Department Announces Milestone for Florida’s Broward Commuter Rail South Project

FTA pledges $164 million investment for a project that will feature a direct ride to downtown Miami from the City of Fort Lauderdale

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced today that Florida's Broward County Commuter Rail South project has reached a critical phase of FTA's Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program. Now in the Engineering phase, Broward County Transit will be able to begin investing in engineering activities, demolition and utility relocation, property acquisition, and other non-construction costs, including procurement of specialized equipment and materials.

FTA is committing approximately $164 million to the Broward Commuter Rail South project. Once complete, this project will extend commuter rail service from Aventura in Miami-Dade County to Fort Lauderdale-delivering a vital north-south transit alternative for southeastern Broward County.

"Our Federal Transit team has worked at the speed of Trump to help Florida's Broward County Commuter Rail South move this critical infrastructure project to the next stage," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. "The milestone means the Sunshine State is one step closer to building a new commuter line that will deliver another affordable, safe, and efficient way for Florida families to get where they need to go."

"The Broward County Commuter Rail South project will improve transportation options for families and commuters between Miami and Fort Lauderdale," said FTA Acting Deputy Administrator Matthew Cahill. "Transportation and mobility are all about improving the functionality of cities. This project will help connect South Floridians to essential services such as healthcare, education and employment centers."

Additional Information:

The CIG program is a multi-step, multi-year funding opportunity to help communities carry out transformational transit projects nationwide.

Once all financial, technical, and legal requirements are completed, FTA's anticipated CIG funding commitment to the Broward County Commuter Rail South project will be $164 million, subject to the annual appropriation of funds by Congress.

Funding would support 10.5 miles of commuter rail service along the existing rail service along the current Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway to connect northeast Miami-Dade County, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, the Dania Beach/Airport District, and neighborhoods south of Downtown Fort Lauderdale. The proposed project includes three stations and new rail vehicles for the planned service.
