Washington, DC-Today, the U.S Supreme Court ruled that President Donald Trump does not have the legal authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose global tariffs without Congressional approval. The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) has voiced concern about the economic impact of the new tariffs on local communities. The organization has also supported the bipartisan resolutions in Congress that call for removing barriers to trade and prioritizing economic policies that support consumers, families and businesses. In response to today's Supreme Court decision, USCM President David Holt, Mayor of Oklahoma City, issued the following statement:
"America's mayors commend today's majority opinion of the Supreme Court regarding tariffs. Today's opinion is a reminder that the rule of law still prevails. All presidential actions are subject to our nation's laws. Further, one of the foundational elements of the laws that govern our nation is the Constitutional separation of powers, which was also asserted today. We welcome the opinion's reestablishment of Congressional authority, something that is much needed in a topic as impactful to our cities as tariffs.
"Though the wisdom of tariff policy is not the Court's concern, America's mayors have consistently opposed recent tariffs that have threatened to damage our economy, our international relationships, and our border cities. We welcome the reconsideration of recent tariff policy that this decision now forces. We are hopeful that this decision will force Congress and the President to the table to work together on a more strategic and comprehensive trade policy."
