BSC to commemorate 25th anniversary of 9/11 with campus storytelling panel

Published: Sep 08 2026

Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Bismarck State College will bring together members of the BSC community who experienced that historic day on campus to share their firsthand memories and reflections.

"25 Years Later: BSC Remembers 9/11 - Reflections from those who were on campus that day" will be held Thursday, Sept. 10, at 3 p.m. in the BSC Live Event Venue, Room 109 of the Advanced Technology Center, 1220 Schafer St. The event is free and open to BSC students and employees, alumni, retirees and the public.

KFYR-TV reporter Jody Kerzman will moderate the storytelling panel featuring current BSC employees who were faculty, staff or students at BSC on Sept. 11, 2001.

Panelists will take the audience back to that Tuesday morning and share how they first learned about the attacks, what was happening in classrooms and offices as the events unfolded, how students and employees responded, and what the atmosphere was like across campus.

The conversation will also explore how people received news and communicated during a national crisis in a time before smartphones and social media, as well as the personal moments and memories that have stayed with panelists for 25 years.

For today's BSC students, most of whom were born years after the attacks, the panel offers an opportunity to experience history through the stories of faculty and staff they see on campus today. Some of those employees were themselves BSC students in 2001 and will share what it was like to be a college student as an event that would change the country unfolded in real time.

Historical BSC photos and memorabilia from 2001 will be incorporated into the event. Attendees will also receive a commemorative reprint of an American flag poster originally printed by Image Printing and distributed throughout the Bismarck-Mandan community following 9/11. Residents and businesses displayed the posters in windows and homes as a symbol of the nation's unity in the days following the attacks. Image Printing donated 200 reprints of the original poster for distribution at the BSC event.

The storytelling panel will be recorded to help preserve the firsthand accounts as part of BSC's institutional history.
