County Executive Adam Bello today announced the appointment of Matthew Schwartz as Monroe County Attorney. Mr. Schwartz will assume the role on October 1, 2025, replacing former County Attorney John Bringewatt who was recently appointed to the New York State Court of Claims by Governor Kathy Hochul.
"I have known Matthew for over 10 years and have always admired his legal skills, leadership, and determination. His extensive record as a prosecutor and municipal attorney makes him an ideal fit to lead the Monroe County Law Department, where he will work with my administration to strengthen public safety initiatives, protect taxpayer resources, and provide helpful guidance. I am confident that Matthew will serve our community with integrity and help us continue to build a stronger, more accountable Monroe County," said County Executive Bello.
Prior to being appointed County Attorney, Matthew served as Senior Deputy County Attorney and Supervisor of the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office, where he worked with County Executive Bello and the Monroe County Office of Probation on the JEDS Program. He also worked in the Monroe County District Attorney's Office as a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, including in several leadership positions; Chief of the Major Felony Bureau from December 2021 thru January 2024; Chief of the Special Investigations Bureau from January 2012 thru December 2021, and Deputy Chief of the Special Investigations Bureau from December 2008 thru January 2012. In each of these roles, Matthew worked with law enforcement professionals to bring justice to victims and their families, and accountability to those who broke the law.
"I am honored to be selected as the next Monroe County Attorney and grateful for the trust placed in me by County Executive Bello to serve in this role. The Law Department is vital to ensuring County government operates with integrity, accountability, and fairness. I look forward to working in the Bello administration and alongside the dedicated staff in the Law Department to uphold the law, protect taxpayer resources, and provide guidance that strengthens our community," said Schwartz.
Led by the County Attorney, the Monroe County Law Department is responsible for advising the County Executive, Legislature, and all county departments, ensuring that policies and actions comply with local, state, and federal law. Its work spans civil litigation, contracts, real property matters, children and family services, and legislative bill drafting, as well as protecting the County's interests in court. Beyond defending the County in legal disputes, the department plays a critical role in shaping sound governance, promoting accountability, and safeguarding taxpayer resources. Through its commitment to fairness, professionalism, and public service, the Monroe County Law Department helps ensure that county government operates transparently and effectively on behalf of the community.
