CCU Honors Legendary Softball Coach Larry Hays with Hall of Fame Induction

Longtime coach recognized for faith-driven leadership and impact on generations of student-athletes

Colorado Christian University (CCU) honored one of its beloved leaders, Head Softball Coach Larry Hays, with induction into the CCU Athletics Hall of Fame during the University's Blue and Gold Banquet on Thursday, October 30.

Hays, who joined CCU in 2019 after a legendary 40-year career in Texas collegiate athletics, has transformed the Cougar Softball program into a national contender - leading the team to multiple Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) titles and record-setting seasons, including a 57-win campaign in 2023.

The Hall of Fame recognition was presented during a night that also featured Major League Baseball manager Mike Matheny as keynote speaker for the University's President's Speaker Series and Athletics Banquet.
"Coaching here has been a blessing," Hays told the crowd as he accepted the honor. "At CCU, teachers and coaches see our players as eternal beings. That makes all the difference."

Known for his steady leadership and servant-hearted approach, Hays has earned the respect of his players and peers alike. Under his direction, the Cougars have become known not only for their championship-level play but for their Christ-centered culture.

"Coach Hays simplifies the game but elevates the purpose," said junior player Hanna Espinoza. "He talks a lot about trust - about playing hard and playing free - and he reminds us every day that our faith comes first."

Prior to CCU, Hays built a Hall of Fame résumé at Lubbock Christian University and Texas Tech University, amassing more than 1,500 wins across baseball and softball. He has previously been inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.

"Coach Hays is who you hope your daughter's coach will be - a servant leader who develops champions on the field and followers of Christ off it," said Matheny, who shared the stage with Hays during the event.

Reflecting on the evening, CCU President Eric K. Hogue praised Hays for modeling the mission of the University.

"Larry represents the heart of Christ-centered athletics," Hogue said. "He's shown what it looks like to compete with excellence, to lead with humility, and to make an eternal impact."
