Ashgabat, Turkmenistan - 19 October 2026 - The official handover ceremony of state-of-the-art LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) equipment took place at the Natural Gas Scientific-Research Institute of State Concern "Turkmengas". The event was held within the framework of the project "European Union (EU) for a Green Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Climate Action 2024-2029," co-funded by the European Union and the Federal Foreign Office of Germany and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

The official ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Turkmenistan, Ms. Petra Dachtler; the Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Turkmenistan, Mr. Madalinsky; leadership and specialists of SC "Turkmengas" and the Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gas, as well as representatives of international organizations.

The handover of the equipment marks a practical step in implementing the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan, SC "Turkmengas", and GIZ. Last year, the Information and Analytical Center was successfully opened at the Institute, establishing a digital and analytical foundation for data management. The current phase logically continues this work: the project is handing over high-tech LDAR equipment from the leading manufacturer SENSIA Solutions, designed for real-time visualization and precise pinpointing of gas leaks at industrial facilities.

The implementation of LDAR technology has a dual effect:

  • Environmental: Rapid leak detection directly contributes to Turkmenistan's commitments under the Global Methane Pledge and the Paris Agreement.

  • Economic: Preventing natural gas losses preserves valuable raw material resources and enhances operational safety at gas facilities.

The ceremony also marked the launch of a specialized three-day training program for specialists from SC "Turkmengas" and the Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gas. The program covers theoretical modules, work with specialized software, and practical skills development under field conditions at the facilities of the "Gündogargazakdyryş" management in the city of Shatlyk.

"The introduction of advanced LDAR equipment is a crucial practical step that connects the analytical work of our Information and Analytical Center with concrete operational actions. These technologies will not only improve monitoring accuracy and protect the environment in line with our climate commitments, but also reduce losses of valuable natural gas, ensuring the sustainable and safe development of Turkmenistan's energy sector," noted Dr. Caroline Milow, GIZ Program Director.

Collaborative efforts under the "EU for a Green Turkmenistan" project will continue to promote methane emission reduction, strengthen the technical and scientific capacity of national experts, and advance the region's green transformation.
