Ascension Elmbrook Addresses Social Isolation with ‘Social Meal for Seniors’

Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital - Elmbrook Campus is working to address social isolation amongst older adults in Waukesha county through its Social Meal for Seniors events. Around 44% of Waukesha County households have at least one member who is over the age of 60. Recent studies show older adults who are socially isolated have up to a 50% increased risk of developing dementia.

Connection is prevention. Strong social connections reduce stress, boost mental health, and help people live longer, healthier lives.

"Some people who are 65 and older may not have the same relationships they've had in the past, especially if their family members have moved away," Nancy Shea, Community Health Lead for Ascension Elmbrook said. "We're working on efforts to combat that."

As part of those efforts, Ascension Elmbrook is hosting a series of Social Meals for Seniors to bring this population of older adults together to teach them about the benefits of building community.

"This event is a nice way to get out and interact with and meet people," participant Nik Rettinger said. "A lot of us older folks start to isolate ourselves and it can get to a point where we have to make a conscientious effort to get out into society. This gives us an opportunity to do it."

Social isolation in seniors has been identified as a priority issue to address in the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) for Waukesha County. Ascension Elmbrook is collaborating with community groups, including the Waukesha County Public Health Department, to improve social isolation for older adults in the area.

"At Ascension Wisconsin, it is our mission to care for those who are vulnerable," Shea said. "By hosting these events to connect older adults, we hope to make a difference in improving their overall health and wellness."

An upcoming, free Social Meal for Seniors is scheduled for Wednesday, December 3 from 3-5 pm at Ascension Elmbrook Hospital Cafeteria, 19333 West North Avenue, Brookfield, WI 53045.
