Four active-duty noncommissioned officers assigned to Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Clothing and Textiles volunteered at local non-profit shelter on Sept. 11, serving lunch to unhoused community members.
U.S. Army Master Sgt. Amanda Payton, Sgt. 1st Class Alexander Lagrange and Sgt. 1st Class Marcus Ransome, along with U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Deron Cooke, served meals from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. as part of the annual Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.
The observance encourages Americans to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and recognize the service of first responders, military personnel and others who responded to the tragedy. Congress designated Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance in 2009.
By volunteering at the shelter, the NCOs transformed a day of national tragedy into an opportunity for service, unity and resilience. Their efforts supported community members in need while reflecting the enduring commitment of service members to strengthen communities they serve.
"Volunteering is a meaningful way to honor the memory of those lost on Sept. 11, the courage of first responders and the sacrifices of our armed forces," Payton said. "By giving back, we help build stronger communities and carry forward the spirit of unity that emerged in the aftermath of the attacks."
The service project reflected DLA Troop Support's commitment to community engagement and the values of selfless service demonstrated by the nation in the days and years following Sept. 11.
