The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) invites the public to participate in an inclusive and family-friendly fishing event on Thursday, July 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Birdseye Hollow Pond, town of Bradford, Steuben County.
During the event, DEC fisheries and environmental education staff, Environmental Conservation Police Officers, and Forest Rangers will be on hand to help first-time anglers and others who may need assistance. DEC Wildlife staff will also display animal pelts and tracks of common mammals.
People of all ages, abilities, and experiences are welcome to come and learn to fish. Fishing rods and adaptive equipment will be available for loan during the event.
The event is free, and fishing licenses are not required to fish during the program. Contact Public Participation Specialist Michelle Margeson with questions at [email protected]or call (585) 226-5440.
In addition to activities like the learn-to-fish event, Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Coordinators in DEC's Accessibility Program work to expand access for people of all ages and abilities. DEC's Region 8 Accessibility Coordinator, Gretchen Cicora, can be reached at (607) 776-2165. Region 8 covers Chemung, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates counties. See DEC's Accessible Recreation web page for an interactive map of all accessible recreation locations on DEC lands.
DEC sponsors several free learn-to-fish events throughout the State where possession of a fishing license is not required. Learn-to-fish events are available on DEC's website. These events complement Governor Kathy Hochul's "Get Offline, Get Outside" initiative that promotes physical and mental health by helping New York's kids and families to put down their phones and computers, take a break from social media, and enjoy recreation and outdoor social gatherings.
