IDEA Institute Hosts Special Screening of The Heart of Access

June 10, 2026

Join ASPPH's IDEA Institute for a special live viewing of The Heart of Access, an award-winning documentary that chronicles San Francisco's community-led response to the COVID-19 pandemic in historically marginalized communities. Through the experiences of community leaders, frontline workers, and public health professionals, the film highlights how trusted partnerships and culturally responsive approaches contributed to strong vaccination uptake and improved health outcomes.

Following the screening, participants will engage in a live discussion with Dr. Jonathan Fuchs (San Francisco Department of Public Health and UC San Francisco), Dr. Berta Hernandez (Instituto Familiar de la Raza), and Amy Lee (San Francisco Department of Public Health). Speakers will reflect on lessons learned from San Francisco's response, the role of documentary film in elevating health equity, and implications for academic public health.

Designed for faculty, educators, students, and public health professionals, this event will also examine how documentary film can be incorporated into public health education to foster meaningful conversations about equity, community engagement, and trust. Participants will gain practical ideas for using film-based learning to connect public health concepts with real-world experiences and strengthen classroom engagement.

Register today to reserve your spot.
