Celebrating 40 Years of Service: Scott Mowl, Recreation Supervisor

The City of Bellflower is highlighting Scott Mowl, a recreation supervisor whose 40 years of service have helped shape local parks and programs. His commitment reflects a deep-rooted history with Bellflower, where his career has come full circle.

A lifelong resident of Bellflower, Scott spent much of his childhood at Simms Park. His parents operated Bellflower Plumbing and Heating from 1978 to 2003, and as a child he spent countless hours at the park participating in recreation programs. At age 13, Mowl began volunteering at Simms Park, and at age 16, he was hired under the guidance of mentors Rich Pierce and Chuck Fernandez.

He went on to earn an associate degree from Cerritos College and a bachelor's degree in parks and recreation management from Northern Arizona University. Throughout his four decades with the City, Mowl worked at Simms and Caruthers parks before moving to Thompson Park 14 years ago. Today, he oversees the T. Mayne Thompson Park facility and the Bellflower Aquatic Center, managing more than 12 acres of community resources, including playgrounds, ballfields and pools.

For Mowl, Bellflower has always been more than a workplace. The Parks & Recreation staff who mentored him as a teenager inspired his career and helped shape the person he is today. That experience is what motivates him to give back by mentoring the next generation of recreation professionals, many of whom begin their first jobs under his leadership.

"Simply put, I am the man that I am because of the impact and opportunities that the Bellflower Parks and Recreation Department and the people that work there have had on my life," Mowl said.

In his free time, he enjoys golfing, spending time with family and rooting for the Los Angeles Angels. Fun fact: Scott is a former athlete who was drafted by the Houston Astros in three consecutive years.

The City of Bellflower thanks Mowl for his 40 years of leadership and dedication to the community.
