Announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the incidents that occurred in Albania (31.05.2026)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its deep concern over the incidents that occurred yesterday, May 30, 2026, in Zvërnec, Albania, during a protest by residents concerning their property rights, among whom was a Greek citizen who was injured. The Embassy of Greece in Tirana promptly took all appropriate steps to ensure that he receives all necessary consular and medical assistance.

The Greek Embassy in Tirana also made representations to the Albanian side, requesting full clarification of the incident and accountability. In this context, we note the Albanian authorities' initial response.

We underline the need for full respect for the rule of law, including the protection of the rights and properties of members of the Greek National Minority, as well as the importance of effective protection of environmentally protected areas, in the context of alignment with the European acquis, compliance with which is a prerequisite for progress in the accession process.
