Rep. Halbrook Defends Tariffs; Highlights Need to Restore IL Manufacturing

January 29, 2026

SPRINGFIELD, IL - In floor debate during the first week of the 2026 legislative session, State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) voiced his strong opposition to a Democrat-sponsored resolution that condemned President Trump's use of tariffs to protect American workers and industry.

Defending the current administration's trade policy, Rep. Halbrook reminded lawmakers that tariffs have long been used by both parties to strengthen American industry and security. "What President Trump did was finally stop pretending that free trade was fair trade," Halbrook said.

He went on to further criticize the hypocrisy of the resolution, adding, "The idea that Illinois Democrats who raise taxes every year, jack up fees, and drive families out of the state are suddenly champions of working families is hard to take."

Halbrook urged a "no" vote on the resolution, calling instead for real solutions that make Illinois more affordable and economically competitive.
